From Ruili, the Burma border town, I took an overnight bus to Kunming (18-21 hours according to the ticket lady), the capital city of Yunnan province. The ride was quite amusing as I managed to hoop on a super-fast Korean (Daewoo) bus, which is a rare sight in such an remote town. The ticket is also a little more expensive too, but I really keen to see how "super-fast" a Korean bus it can be, compare with the domestic cruisers.
Reckless Chinese bus driver navigates "super-fast" bus on the twisty mountain road at night? I don't know about that... I was hoping a sleeper pill can make the night fly-by but it wasn't. The bus got pull over three times by PSB (police), surprisingly not because of the reckless speed, instead they are searching for drugs smuggling from Burma. I showed them my "China Travel Permit" (for HK and Macau citizens), he looks at it suspiciously and asked to search my backpack. Not a problem, until they found so many CDs (where I keep all the photos) and they started questioning whether they are porn movies... What can I say? Few minutes later they also found I have three passports along with the permit. Now they are getting really serious and thought I must be those drug dealers with fake passports from all over the worlds?
Perhaps of my innocent looking, or perhaps with all the strange gears I have (big alarm clock, two flashlights, cable lock and seven underwears?) that made them believe I am just a traveler. They let us go and finally we arrived Kunming in less than 15 hours with all those hassle. It was a hell of ride and I didn't get a minute of sleep. Did I mention that we managed to pass three domestic buses that departed earlier than us on the same route?
