Travel with Winter in Asia

November 25, 2003

Winsor brought me a pack of Hong Kong style instant milk tea to relief my homesick, along with few camera batteries that I lost during the trip (hey this is the only thing I lost so far! Not too bad indeed!). It was nice to see Winsor and Vivian, They made me feel closer to home.

Anita once mentioned that Shanghai and Hong Kong are pretty much the same, the commercial district, the subway and the streets. While not whole-heartly agreed, Shanghai is really a big city with the international feel. Even better the old European architectures give a sensational touch of the international theme. It is the only city in China I see no communist slogans on the walls, no more "Long live Chairman Mao". How ironic, this city is actually part of the communist country?

I feel a strong disconnection with the city, with the modern shopping malls and the upscale restaurants. Few days ago I was having a Y1 lunch and now I am wandering in the maze of shopping malls. The cheapest meal is the Y20 McDonald's? It is surely surreal.

I am not saying I don't enjoy being in here. In fact I just encountered the most bizarre and strangest thing ever happened. The guy that sleep next to me in the dormitory, is actually Aaron, my good friend in Vancouver. We were scared and then pointing at each other laughing to death -- we just cannot believe how small the world is! We spent the day together to celebrate the unusual reunion.
