Travel with Winter in Asia

November 29, 2003

Nothing really worth mentioning in last few days but I guess I should keep this site up-to-date anyway. I know my mom she must have been visiting this site everyday, and looking up the dictionary for any unfamiliar word. I know she will have less worry if it is updated regularly. Plus I really have nothing to do in the evening, in a somewhat less developed town that everything closes by 8pm.

The government started regulating Internet Cafe operation last year. I was told there were some incidents trigger the government to impose new rules to previously unregulated activity, and the government did it with style too -- For national security reason they shut down all Internet Cafes in China... Until a new regulation is ready. It must be quite a scene to see all the shops went out of business in a couple of days...

It somewhat reflects the current situation of China. It is in full stream of economic development and often the policies are lagging behind, or lack thereof... And smart businessman can get really rich quick, I mean very very rich. A week in Shanghai reminds me how poverty the rest of China is, and I started to understand why the people here are all about making money, aggressively.

Speak of aggressiveness, the people in this province (Anhui) seems less aggressive when trying to sell me stuffs. And they actually smile to you, which is a rare sight in other part of China I have visited unless I am putting my hand in my pocket to give out money.

I am heading to GuiZhou and skipping the south eastern part of China, which I am not very fascinating about (maybe because it is too close to my home town Hong Kong?). I stopped by Jingdezhen to stay overnight, the city is the major producer of porcelain for about thousand years. If you look at the bottom of your chinese bowls or dishes, you might find the city name printed on it.
