Travel with Winter in Asia

November 08, 2003

The day I leave Beijing just happened the first snow fall. It is actually quite scenic with snow covering the Tiananmen Square. I woke up at very late in the morning at 11am and packup all my stuffs just in time for the checkout cutoff time at noon. Since I am taking the night train to Hohhot, I went for a lunch and walk around Tiananmen Square again and took some more pictures. Afterward I pickup my backpack and took the bus to Beijing West train station.

It was a lot of people entering the station. I have to fright and squish myself into the gate before I can enter the waiting platform. The train was full of people too. I guess the wet weather and the process of getting onto the train made me so tiring. I went for the whole trip for ten hours and arriving Hohhot at the morning around 8am.

The hostel I am staying is right in front of the train station. I was going for the dorm room but the reception lady refused to let me stay in the Dorm as I am foreigner.. Okay I paid a little more for the single room (Y35) with a decent view of the city at 7th floor.

Wandering around the street I found a bike rental place, the daily rental is only Y2!! Now that's perfect to navigate the city! So basically I biked for the whole day and found many interesting eating places.. There is a ally of small restaurants next to a Muslim Temple and the BBQ lamb is just sooo tasty. So good that I ridded back there in the evening to have it again.

So that's it, with only one day I had pretty much biked around the whole town and since it is too cold to join the grassland tour (in fact they don't run it in winter...). I decided to take the morning train leaving the town to PingYao. I will stop over at DaiTong to visit the Cloud Ride Cave on the way.

Some pictures from Hohhot, the capital province of Inner Mongolia:

This is the best lamp stew I have ever had! The lady told me it is XinJiang BBQ style :)
